Volunteer Potting New Tree Seedlings at Forest ReLeaf
Last year Forest ReLeaf received 10,500 tree seedlings, of which we set a single day record by potting 2,100+ seedlings. This year Forest ReLeaf will receive 15,000 seedlings, many of which will be sent in the late summer and fall to Joplin, MO to replace the trees lost in the 2011 tornado that swept through Joplin. So, this year we want to help out both Forest ReLeaf and Joplin by planting 4,500 – 5,000 seedlings over two Saturday mornings! To accomplish this task, we will need at least 27 volunteers on both days, which is the number of volunteers that we had on the 2011 workday. As we did in 2011, we will invite the other two MMN Chapters and the St. Charles Master Gardener Chapter to join us. Dress for the weather and bring work gloves, as water and donuts will be provided. Volunteer Cavity Nester Habitat Restoration Program
The Cavity Nester Habitat Restoration Program is a new project for the Confluence Chapter. Urban environments tend to eliminate many cavity nester sites that keep birds such as Blue Birds and Purple Martins in the urban areas. Moreover, the loss of such habitats can lead to declining numbers of such birds. The Program will install additional Blue Bird houses at the Spring Bend BB Trail and add a new trail at Quail Ridge Park. In addition, a Purple Martin House will be installed in a new location at Quail Ridge Park. The ultimate goal of the Program is to install cavity nester sites at other St. Charles County Parks, as well, and to train Chapter members to monitor and maintain such sites.
